Workout Options That Are Lower Impact

By Kamryn Mattson

While we might love the idea of running marathons and would like to jump rope like Rocky Balboa, the reality is that many people's body simple cannot tolerate that type of high impact. Fortunately, there are plenty of lower impact options that are effective forms of exercise.

Rather than run or jog, slow things down a bit and walk your way to good health. Walking outside is ideal as the terrain varies a great deal which is good cardio. If outside activity isn't for you, opt for a treadmill at your home or at the gym. Using an elliptical cross trainer is another low impact activity that can burn a high amount of calories. Hiking is another excellent option, and you can enjoy some great scenery and get in great shape at the same time.

If you do enjoy the great outdoors, there are certainly other fun exercise options to consider, especially if you live near a large lake, a river or the ocean. Stand-up paddle boards are a great low impact choice, and you also could consider kayaking or even joining a rowing club. All of these activities burn calories without jostling you around.

Another cardio activity that burns calories but reduces impact on the body is swimming. Consider joining a water aerobics class or simply swim a variety of laps in your community pool or your own private pool if you are fortunate enough to have one. If neither option is available to you, consider joining the YMCA or a gym that has a lap pool available. Some local colleges also offer swimming classes and allow you to access their pool for a small fee during certain hours.

While you might be trying to avoid muscle pain by opting for low impact, sometimes aches and strains do occur and can cause a fair amount of discomfort. When this happens, consider drug-free and safe pain relief products such as a physiological hybrid shape. This product, which is designed using the principles of kinesiology, has a special design that protects the sore area while reaching out and gaining strength from nearby muscles that are not sore or strained.

There are many different types of physio hybrid shapes from companies such as Rapid Force for various parts of the body prone to muscle pain. There are shapes for shoulder pain relief, for knee pain relief, as well as for the elbows and the upper back and lower back. All of these shapes adhere directly to the skin using a safe, strong hypoallergenic adhesive.
